Nice weather!

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Another Pumpkin Patch is behind us and again it was a huge success… the weather was in the high seventies all weekend which helped. We had some great volunteers this year including volunteers for the Randy Pluff benefit (more on that at a later date), Southern Door 8th graders and the Maritime Museum. I thought the bees were going to be a huge problem since I got stung not once but twice on Friday when we were cooking brats. But Saturday and Sunday the bees didn’t seem to be a huge problem. The University of Wisconsin Marching Band did their Fifth Quarter performance compliments of Dave and Vonnie Callsen from Main Street Market. Always a hit with the crowd is Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns.

Here are some random pics of the craziness…

And none other than Mark Sawyer is in charge of cooking the brats for the Egg Harbor Business Association… It’s a lot of fun working it but I think the beer helps.

What I did on my summer “vacation”…

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Where did it go? Summer I mean. We had a great summer… the weather was phenomenal, the guests were happy and we were able to get out and about in Door County.

With a colder and rainier than usual Spring we were happy to get the warm weather in July and August. We didn’t have a lot of the extremely hot weather which was nice. Weather, blah, blah, blah. Let’s get to the good stuff.

Well… it didn’t start out great. I tore a tendon and after surgery and a cast for two months etc., I am back walking 5 miles… thanks Dr. Hecker and Ministry Door County Medical Center!

We visited some hangouts including John Henry’s…

Island Time…

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Our annual Door County road trip took us to none other than… Washington Island. Bill and Kathy were up and they hadn’t been to the Island in years so we headed up to Gill’s Rock. First stop? The Shoreline Restaurant for lunch. I had the whitefish chowder and a smoked whitefish wrap…yum! Bill and Kathy had chowder and split the Jamaican jerk whitefish sandwich and Mark had the crab melt. All were excellent… so was the view.

Gill's Rock near the Shoreline Restaurant

Then off to Northport to catch the ferry. With minimal wait Bill drove the car on the ferry and we all got out and went to the upper deck.

The weather was beautiful and the ride was smooth. Once on the island Mark and Bill wanted to check out the ostrich farm. Not sure why but any type of zoo atmosphere makes me homesick. I always feel bad for the animals, although the ostrichs and other animals including a bear seemed to be well taken care of.

Next stop, Nelson’s Hall to renew our Bitter’s Club membership. Bill and Kathy were new to the experience of a shot of bitters… Kathy wanted to sip hers and the bartender promptly told her it probably wasn’t a good idea.

And after we knocked back the shot… we got this…

Then we toured the island some more. Washington Island has a couple of really nice beaches but we didn’t bring suits. Then we decided to stop at Sailor’s Pub which is on the water and looked great…closed. They didn’t open until 5 pm. So we head back to the ferry dock because we noticed a tiki looking bar. We walked in the guy was like “We closed at 2:30″. What? Sooo, we went to the KK FISKE Restaurant and Granary. They had outside seating and…

a tale of two lawyers

Fresh Lawyers. We ordered up a basket and guess what? Those bottoms feeders were damn good! We decided to head back to the mainland after that. We stopped at one of my favorite places Fred and Fuzzy’s and then back to the metropolis of Egg Harbor and ate at Trio which is always good. A perfect day was had by all.

Random Door County stuff…

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

We went to the Door Community Auditorium last night to see the Indigo Girls but not before eating at Peninsula Pub.

It was lucky duck night and I didn’t want to miss it. What’s Lucky Duck you ask? Well, the Pub issues a certain amount of numbers (you can only get in if there are numbers available). Emilie and I were able to secure numbers a few months ago. Then you put twenty bucks in before the drawing but you must be present to win. The winnings depend on how many people show up. If the person isn’t there half goes back in the pot and they draw another winner. The winner this week? None other than our gardener/landscape lady, Jerry! YAY Jerry. PS… Thanks Kyle and Faye, the food was great.

Indigo Girls

The Indigo Girls played in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. There were a lot of locals there which was nice to see. Why I only recognized about three songs, but the ladies were hugely entertaining. Their song “Closer to Fine” nearly brought down the house as did their very last song “Galileo”. It was a really nice night.

Door County Triathlon

The Door County Triathlon is this weekend. Unfortunately, after tearing a tendon in my ankle and needing surgery, I am out this year. I transferred my spot to Emilie’s friend Chrystal and I will volunteer instead. Not quite as fun, but I can cheer all my girls on as they pass me on the way to the finish line. Good luck girls and to all the participants.

Something got messed up with my blog so if you would like to subscribe to my blog just enter your email at the top of the page. PSS… I don’t share the email addresses. Thanks…

PSSS- I am known to make spelling errors but I made two in the title before I reread it this afternoon… Damn that spell checker.

Fireworks and Parade…

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

We headed to downtown Egg Harbor on July 3 for the fireworks and we certainly were not disappointed… they were phenomenal! Tons of people, music and food. It was great. We always stop at the Alpine for drinks after to see my friend Emily Bertschinger Pitchford and her family.

For the parade on Monday, we got our float done in record time… enough time to run down to Bruce and Gail’s at the Lull-Abi Inn for a minute to catch their live band before the parade.

This is basically how our float starts out…

Our guests get afraid, very afraid when they see this hot tub hanging out in the Egg Harbor Lodge lawn a few days before the parade. They all say “Oh… it’s for the float!” Got that cleared up. Then progress begins…

This is our friend Tom… without him it would be a much bigger chore to put this gig together…

Mark made brats for us and Tom and Helen who used to stay with us (now they have a condo) came up as did Katie and Jim Pionkoski. Katie and Jim own a new cheese store in Egg Harbor called Wisconsin CheeseMasters.Com on Rainbow Ridge Court at the top of the Egg Harbor hill. Their Ba Ba Bleu Cheese… yum.

This is our granddaughter Adi. Her big brother Jaden passed out the candy in the parade. Remember the good old days when you could just throw it? Not anymore.

Adi and Grammy

The parade begins with a fright…

Nellie, Joe, monster, Emilie, Sadie

For some reason we didn’t get a picture of our float in it’s entirety but check my previous blog post… the float was pretty much the same as last year. But hey, it’s tradition. Mark and I rode on the bed and the girls were in the hot tub. The signs say “Make your own fireworks at Egg Harbor Lodge” and “Leave the kids at home!” under the hot tub. Now why mess with perfection?

Anyway, much fun was had by all. Just 363 days (leap year) till next year.

June in Door County…

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

June is a great month to visit Door County. Usually our weather is great…albeit hot right now. The weather is supposed to be great over the weekend into next week… and a bit cooler! If you get up here don’t forget to check out Fish Creek Heritage Days which began June 4 and runs through June 12. Lots of history here folks.

Door County is host to the annual Lighthouse Walk which makes sense since we have 10, yes 10 lighthouses located right here in DC. It is Saturday and Sunday… check the Door County Maritime Museum‘s website for details.

.

Door County Lighthouse Festival

Have you ever driven over the steel bridge in downtown Sturgeon Bay? Well, with a huge effort of citizens and musicians, many of of them famous (ever heard of Jackson Browne?… thought so), Sturgeon Bay has a huge music fest this weekend with live outdoor music near the historic bridge with most downtown pubs offering live music as well. The Steel Bridge Songfest is a four day festival with over 100 bands and a pub crawl. Whew!

Looking for nightlife around EH? Head down to Mojo Rosa’s or Jersey Shore Pub (both downtown Egg Harbor) this Friday night for live music. PS… they both are within walking distance of Egg Harbor Lodge.

Egg Harbor Door County

There is a plethora of great restaurants, boutiques, lodging and bars in Egg Harbor. Plus, we have great beaches and a phenomenal marina and are centrally located in Door County. No wonder we were voted one of America’s Coolest Small Towns!

PS… Don’t forget, July 4th is almost here. Egg Harbor has tons of festivities planned. Oh yeah, Egg Harbor was voted “Best Fireworks” by Door County Magazine.

Bodeans at the Auditorium…

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

I’m a bit bummed that we are busy next weekend because one of my favorite bands, The Bodeans are playing at the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek next Saturday.

The Bodeans

I think there are still tickets available… it’s going to be a great show. Hopefully, they will be back again sometime.

Egg Harbor Baseball… Champions!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Our beloved Egg Harbor Indians have clinched the title for the first time in 22 years this past Sunday. Mark coached the 1987 team to victory while Mark Stoeger who has been coaching the Egg Harbor team the last few years was the bat boy that year. Mark’s Dad coached and played, Mark coached and played for Egg Harbor as did his brother Bert, our oldest Josh and our youngest Joe who still plays. Mark’s dad Bob Sawyer was inducted into the Door County League Baseball Hall of Fame ( yes, there is even a Hall of Fame!) last year. For years, Door County baseball was the activity of choice each Sunday afternoon for many locals and we still try to get to games as often as possible. We were there Sunday for the celebration which coincided with “Fan Appreciation Day”. Mark roasted a pig and there was a potluck for all the players and fans afterward. I snapped this photo of the team after the game…

Egg Harbor Indians...2009 Champs!

Joe’s Nor-Door American- Legion Baseball team (Mark coaches the team) also went to the State tournament last weekend… sadly they lost one game before the championship game. Here is our family after the Regional game which was held at our home field in Institute.

Summertime not only means keeping Egg Harbor Lodge running smoothly, it also means tons of baseball.
