With unseasonably warm weather this past winter, meteorologists are calling for the same thing this spring. That is great news. We start our Spring cleaning at Egg Harbor Lodge in April. Once the snow pushes out of the harbor we don’t get such cold breezes up here on the bluff. A friend of mine Pat Curtis took this photo of the ice breaking up…
Beautiful isn’t it? This was taken weeks ago and even then the ice was already breaking up. Southern Door County saw more than one ice shanty drift off into oblivion, most likely ending up in the bottom of Green Bay.
We open in May with expectations of cherry blossoms by the middle of the month if the decent weather holds. Reservations are coming in nicely so if you have your dates picked out, better give me a call.
Pat also took this picture of a barn… I am partial to barns for some reason.
And he calls himself an amateur!
Last night, American Folklore Theatre won the Governor’s Arts, Culture & Heritage award at the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Tourism.

With less than a week to go there is still time to plan your New Year’s weekend in Door County. Most of the restaurants in Egg Harbor are open for the weekend not to mention the boutiques and shops. Most stores are having amazing sales. Although Egg Harbor Lodge is closed for the season, The Landing, The Ashbrooke, Bay Point Inn, The Landmark and Newport Resort among others are open for business. There are lots of New Years Eve packages including one at Mike’s Port Pub in Jacksonport with room, dinner and drinks all for $175 per couple. Check out 106.9 The Lodge Activity Board for details on all the activities and specials.
JR Jarosh’s famous Jacksonport Polar Bear Plunge gets underway promptly at noon at the beach in Jacksonport. If you haven’t done the plunge before this could be your year as the weather will likely be in the 30′s… but then again this is Door County and the weather could change in minutes.
But the main event IMHO will be Frosty Fest right here in Egg Harbor. The parade begins at 1 pm at the Catholic church and heads north and turns right at Casey’s. After that I don’t know where it goes because we head to Egg Harbor Lodge to park our own float. This is our Wisconsin Badger themed hot tub float from last year…
Real classy with our cans of Bud Lite. After the float there is a one mile fun run. And for the low, low registration price of 15 bucks you also get a pair of Frosty Fest gloves!! Too cute…
We also will have ice sculptures throughout the village, The Egg Harbor Lions Club will be selling brats and you can get yourself a Bloody Mary at Mojo Rosa’s outdoor bar.
We won’t have our annual Hot Tub Girls float this year but look for us to have some kind of festive float. We have a plan but we don’t assemble it until we get to the church parking lot so it’s kind of a hit or miss type gig. Most of the time we think it’s pretty good but sometimes the wind blows the living heck out of it.
After the parade we will head downtown to watch the rest of the Packer game. GO PACK!!!

Well, the wind went nuts in Door County last Thursday night. Egg Harbor Lodge was one of the fortunate ones that still had power. Our phone and internet were out but my cell phone worked so I could get my emails. There was a huge willow tree down across the street at the Ashbrooke and we lost a couple of small trees.

There were trees down everywhere and all five Door County state parks were closed because of the damage. Fish Creek and Ephraim were completely out of power. Downtown Egg Harbor for the most part was OK but the Alpine, Shallows and The Landing weren’t so lucky… no power. The Alpine also had a wedding reception scheduled for Saturday night that had to be moved to a different location because of the outage. 106.9 The Lodge radio station wasn’t back on the air until Sunday afternoon. At Peninsula Players where “the show must go on” did in fact with the help of lanterns. The lodging places called their vacancies into the Door County Visitor Bureau to help displaced guests find a room. The YMCA was open for people to take showers as were community centers like ours in Egg Harbor for coffee, kitchen privileges and internet. Many roads were blocked and there were wires down everywhere. People posted crazy pictures on their Facebook pages. It was unbelievable. I was amazed and thankful no one was injured.
The parks will be closed until Thursday from what I have heard but for the most part everything is back to normal in Door County. This will be a storm that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Fall colors… that is!
Now don’t freak out, just because your reservation in Door County doesn’t begin until the middle of October or later, don’t lose faith. The fall color here in Door County lasts for weeeeeks. Seriously. Right now there are some golds (and reds in some drought ravaged trees) so it is really just beginning, albeit very pretty. The familiar haze is in the air and I am waiting for a bright blue sky day to complement the beginnings of what should be a spectacular Door County fall foliage experience. Everyone that knows me knows I love summer… but fall is seriously a close second. And personally, I don’t think you can find a finer place to experience it than in Door County.
Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch, one of the the biggest festivals in Door County is a mere two weeks away. The village already has cornstalks out and has a scarecrow contest every year. We need to assemble our scarecrow this week but first we need a theme. Any ideas? Even though our Egg Harbor Lodge exhibit consists of the most basic scarecrow every year, we seriously cannot remember how to assemble our display from year to year. But this year… I am Flip videoing the whole process so we will know exactly what to do next year. We never win but with a crew of exactly 2… what do you expect? We still think ours is great even though we are known to duplicate previous efforts. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right?

It’s that time of year kids… Door County’s autumn festival season. Everyone loves a good old fall festival complete with music, food, refreshments, arts and crafts. Baileys Harbor starts it out this Saturday with Autumn Fest held in Kendall Park in downtown Baileys Harbor. Check out the details here.
Not to be left out, Sturgeon Bay will hold it’s Street Art Auction in conjunction with their Harvest Moon Festival.
There will be 4 bands and a street dance held under the full moon. Not in the festival mood? Check out one of Door County’s many state and local parks. Or if you are lucky enough to be staying at Egg Harbor Lodge, grab a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers and hang out on your balcony and enjoy the view!

Yes, that’s right kids… Amy Hanten of Fox 11′s Living with Amy was in Door County last week doing segments featuring, you guessed it, Door County. She stayed at Egg Harbor Lodge along with her daughter Ireland, Producer Abbey and their camera dude (can’t remember his name). I thought Amy and I were going to do a recipe together but when she got here she was like nooo… just you. JUST ME?! I thought it wouldn’t be fit for TV but it aired on Monday and wasn’t quite as horrible as I remembered.
My stalker friend Bruce Hill from the Lull-Abi Inn of Egg Harbor took these pics. As for my recipe Grilled Lemon Chicken… it was good if I do say so myself. Here is the recipe…
GRILLED LEMON CHICKEN
¼ cup good olive oil
3 T minced garlic (about 9 cloves)
½ cup or so dry white wine
1 T grated lemon zest (about 2 lemons)
2 T freshly squeezed lemon juice (no substitutes)
1 ½ t. dried oregano (in the summer I use fresh but use more)
1 t minced fresh thyme
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
4 bone-in skin on chicken breasts cut in half
1 lemon
Light the grill and using indirect heat (or in the oven at 400 degrees). Charcoal works best.
Warm the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium low heat, add the garlic and cook for just a minute but don’t allow the garlic to turn brown. Off the heat add the white wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, oregano, thyme, and 1 teaspoon salt and pour into a 9×12 foil baking pan.
Pat the chicken breasts dry and place them skin sides up over the sauce. Brush the chicken breasts with olive oil and sprinkle them liberally with salt and pepper. Cut the lemon in wedges and tuck it among the pieces of chicken.
Depending on the size of the chicken breasts cook between 45 to an hour. Use an instant read thermometer to make sure the breasts are fully cooked. If they don’t look brown enough remove the pan and place chicken breasts skin side down on the hot part of the grill for just a couple minutes. If using the oven, place under broiler for a the same. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with salt and serve hot with the pan juices.
I like Amy… she is a great cook and is really a sweet person. She has a blog The Cooking Mom where she did recent blogs about Lautenbach’s Orchard Country and Casey’s BBQ and Smokehouse. Amy also has a cookbook The Cooking Mom with tons of great recipes… You can pick it up at Main Street Market.
No... Sarah is not an Amazon... Amy is short.
Polly Helm from Door County Nature Works was on the same show as me with decorating tips for the bedroom. On today’s show, she did a segment on the Mission Grille with a Lobster Bisque that looked phenomenal. I know they filmed quite a few places which is a bonus for Door County…thanks Amy and crew and remember, you are always welcome in Door County!

Next weekend July 30, Carlsville will host a double festival which looks to be tons of fun. The 10th annual Carlsville Day has joined forces with the Town of Egg Harbor in celebrating their Sesquicentennial. The Town of Egg Harbor, which includes Carlsville, kind of runs around the outside the Village of Egg Harbor but mostly to the south. Mark and I live in the town of Egg Harbor but our business Egg Harbor Lodge is in the village… get it? Trust me, I am still confused. Anyway, it looks to be a pretty darn big affair complete with a parade, pony and tractor rides and performances by the UW-Madison Marching Band. Our neighbors, Bob and Dolores Spittlemeister are the Parade Marshalls… nice choice by the way. Not only that, there will be inflatables, craft fairs, free water slides and bands playing from 3-8pm (The Bittorf Bros., Modern Day Drifters and a Polka band… Can’t get better than that). Not enough? How about a cherry pit spit competition (I am good at that) a Wild West reenactment and free Door County Trolley rides to Carlsville businesses and the Egg Harbor Town hall. There will also be a pet psychic… I might have to take our dog Bailey to that. Nah.

I am glad the festival isn’t two days long or they may have named it Carlsville Daze. That would have just been wrong…

We headed to downtown Egg Harbor on July 3 for the fireworks and we certainly were not disappointed… they were phenomenal! Tons of people, music and food. It was great. We always stop at the Alpine for drinks after to see my friend Emily Bertschinger Pitchford and her family.
For the parade on Monday, we got our float done in record time… enough time to run down to Bruce and Gail’s at the Lull-Abi Inn for a minute to catch their live band before the parade.
This is basically how our float starts out…
Our guests get afraid, very afraid when they see this hot tub hanging out in the Egg Harbor Lodge lawn a few days before the parade. They all say “Oh… it’s for the float!” Got that cleared up. Then progress begins…
This is our friend Tom… without him it would be a much bigger chore to put this gig together…
Mark made brats for us and Tom and Helen who used to stay with us (now they have a condo) came up as did Katie and Jim Pionkoski. Katie and Jim own a new cheese store in Egg Harbor called Wisconsin CheeseMasters.Com on Rainbow Ridge Court at the top of the Egg Harbor hill. Their Ba Ba Bleu Cheese… yum.
This is our granddaughter Adi. Her big brother Jaden passed out the candy in the parade. Remember the good old days when you could just throw it? Not anymore.

For some reason we didn’t get a picture of our float in it’s entirety but check my previous blog post… the float was pretty much the same as last year. But hey, it’s tradition. Mark and I rode on the bed and the girls were in the hot tub. The signs say “Make your own fireworks at Egg Harbor Lodge” and “Leave the kids at home!” under the hot tub. Now why mess with perfection?
Anyway, much fun was had by all. Just 363 days (leap year) till next year.

June is a great month to visit Door County. Usually our weather is great…albeit hot right now. The weather is supposed to be great over the weekend into next week… and a bit cooler! If you get up here don’t forget to check out Fish Creek Heritage Days which began June 4 and runs through June 12. Lots of history here folks.
Door County is host to the annual Lighthouse Walk which makes sense since we have 10, yes 10 lighthouses located right here in DC. It is Saturday and Sunday… check the Door County Maritime Museum‘s website for details.

Have you ever driven over the steel bridge in downtown Sturgeon Bay? Well, with a huge effort of citizens and musicians, many of of them famous (ever heard of Jackson Browne?… thought so), Sturgeon Bay has a huge music fest this weekend with live outdoor music near the historic bridge with most downtown pubs offering live music as well. The Steel Bridge Songfest is a four day festival with over 100 bands and a pub crawl. Whew!
Looking for nightlife around EH? Head down to Mojo Rosa’s or Jersey Shore Pub (both downtown Egg Harbor) this Friday night for live music. PS… they both are within walking distance of Egg Harbor Lodge.
There is a plethora of great restaurants, boutiques, lodging and bars in Egg Harbor. Plus, we have great beaches and a phenomenal marina and are centrally located in Door County. No wonder we were voted one of America’s Coolest Small Towns!
PS… Don’t forget, July 4th is almost here. Egg Harbor has tons of festivities planned. Oh yeah, Egg Harbor was voted “Best Fireworks” by Door County Magazine.
