June in Door County…

June is a great month to visit Door County. Usually our weather is great…albeit hot right now. The weather is supposed to be great over the weekend into next week… and a bit cooler! If you get up here don’t forget to check out Fish Creek Heritage Days which began June 4 and runs through June 12. Lots of history here folks.

 

Door County is host to the annual Lighthouse Walk which makes sense since we have 10, yes 10 lighthouses located right here in DC. It is Saturday and Sunday… check the Door County Maritime Museum‘s website for details.

Door County Lighthouse Festival


Have you ever driven over the steel bridge in downtown Sturgeon Bay? Well, with a huge effort of citizens and musicians, many of of them famous (ever heard of Jackson Browne?… thought so), Sturgeon Bay has a huge music fest this weekend with live outdoor music near the historic bridge with most downtown pubs offering live music as well. The Steel Bridge Songfest is a four day festival with over 100 bands and a pub crawl. Whew!

Looking for nightlife around EH? Head down to Mojo Rosa’s or Jersey Shore Pub (both downtown Egg Harbor) this Friday night for live music. PS… they both are within walking distance of Egg Harbor Lodge.

Egg Harbor Door County

There is a plethora of great restaurants, boutiques, lodging and bars in Egg Harbor. Plus, we have great beaches and a phenomenal marina and are centrally located in Door County. No wonder we were voted one of America’s Coolest Small Towns!

PS… Don’t forget, July 4th is almost here. Egg Harbor has tons of festivities planned. Oh yeah, Egg Harbor was voted “Best Fireworks” by Door County Magazine.

Amy Hanten in Door County…

Are you looking for a nice, last minute Christmas gift? Look no further. Amy Hanten of Fox 11′s Living with Amy will be signing her new cookbook The Cooking Mom right here in Door County tomorrow Tuesday, December 21. I personally love her cookbook. It has all the basics and more and would make a perfect gift for newlyweds or anyone who likes to cook. The recipes are straightforward with ingredients that can be found in any grocery store.

Amy starts her day at Cornucopia , a darling kitchen store in Sturgeon Bay. Amy will be signing her book from 11 am until 2 pm Tuesday. Cornucopia is located on Jefferson Street near downtown Sturgeon Bay.

After that, Amy heads up to Baileys Harbor to Novel Ideas, a book store from 3pm until 5pm. Novel Ideas is right on the main drag, Highway 57 in Baileys Harbor.

Door County League Baseball

Today is Sunday and in Door County that means baseball. Mark played and coached for a lot of years and now Joe is playing (I just talked to Mark and he said Joe hit a home run today!). Eddy Allen who owns WDOR, has broadcast the games since 1968… Eddy is Door County’s version of Bob Uecker. I had to work today but ran down to the ball field in Egg Harbor to get a brat and snapped this photo of Eddy..

Eddy’s father started the radio station in 1951 and now Eddy’s son Danny Allen is following in his dad’s footsteps at WDOR. I first met Eddy when I worked at the savings and loan in Sturgeon Bay in 1978 where I usually saw him at the post office. WDOR broadcasts many of Door County sporting events including Mark’s Northern Door Chiefs, so when I couldn’t go to the games I could at least listen to them which was great. Thanks WDOR.

Egg Harbor is in the playoffs and they beat Jacksonport (our arch rivals) today and will play Washington Island next Sunday. Joe will have to come back from UW-Stevens Point to play. He left right now but not before I took this picture of him and his packed to the gills truck.

It feels a lot less sad this year, but we will still miss him tons. Last year I was traumatized when he left. Don’t tell anyone but I think he was too. He is super excited because he and his roommates waited in line for a long time in hopes of getting the dorm room with a kitchen… they did. Dorms with kitchens? Give me a break, what ever happened to hot pots and ramen? Joe’s Uncle Bert said today it sounds like burnt pizza to him… me too.

Egg Harbor‘s team has raised enough money for a well… hopefully that means real bathrooms eventually. The players built their own beer/food stand a couple of years ago. Door County League Baseball is a great way to spend what Nellie and Emilie like to call “Sunday Funday”.

Door County Thresheree…

This weekend, Door County is host to The 28th annual Valmy Thresheree and Antique Machinery Show. If you are not familiar with Valmy it is a bit north of Sturgeon Bay on Highway 57 where Sevastopol High School is located and where all four of our kids graduated.. lucky them. Here is a piece I copied and pasted from the Door Reminder…

The event started in1983 when Bernie and Shirley Geisel (cool people… I added this) asked a group of local farmers to produce a show that would bring back the old ways of farming, including working machinery.

In 1997, the club purchased 30 acres of a nearby farm, seven miles north of Sturgeon Bay. Another adjoining 10 acres were purchased the following year, and the 16th annual Thresheree was held at the new site.

The event now stretches over three days, with country music from Bobby Darren kicking off the festivities with a Friday night performance.

Saturday activities begin with a chainsaw competition at 9:30 a.m. An antique tractor pull gets underway at 11:30 and usually attracts 100 or more entries.

The Jerry Voelker Orchestra provides music for a barn dance from 2-5 p.m. Saturday and a polka mass at 5:30. The day’s festivities conclude with more country music from the Modern Day Drifters at 7:30.

Sunday worship services begin at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., there is a kiddies’ tractor pull, a “Little Farmer” dress-up contest and a straw stack hunt. A barefoot (no shoes) horse pull begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Thresherman of the Year award given out at this time.

The Bittorf Brothers play music from noon-3 p.m., and the Cavalcade of Power antique machinery parade begins at 1 p.m.

At 3:30 p.m. one of the weekend’s most popular attractions gets under way — the mud pig wrestling competition. Teams of four people attempt to catch a pig and place it on top of a barrel in less than one minute. Preregistration is required for participants.

Food and refreshments are served throughout the event, and a flea market draws many vendors. Each year a raffle is held; tickets can be purchased from club members.

The Thresheree takes place on the grounds at 5005 Country View Road, Valmy (nine miles north of Sturgeon Bay). Admission is $5 per day or $8 for the weekend, which includes a souvenir button. For more information, call 743-4859 or 743-5251.

Okay… I have a confession… you probably have figured it out by now… our girls have… well… maybe… pig wrestled… okay… they won… but that was three years ago!!! And now, three years later, for the third year in a row, whose daughters have a appeared on the cover of the Door Reminder??? Oh, ours of course! Not that we are like embarrassed or anything… pig wrestling is cool… right? But seriously, enough is enough and I am sure that there will be some pig wrestlers this year that should covet the Door Reminder cover… please… I am begging you… Door Reminder… pick someone else… ANYONE ELSE! I promise… I will buy an ad.

Anyway… check out the Thresheree… I promise you haven’t seen anything like it and who doesn’t love old farm machinery, a tractor ride, characters and probably the nicest bunch of people you will probably ever run in to? Did I mention ice cold beer???

Birmingham’s

Mark had a meeting in Sturgeon Bay last week so anytime we are south of Egg Harbor we make it our mission to stop and visit Brad at Birmingham’s on Bay Shore Drive or County B as it is referred on the map. Birmingham’s has a good but simple menu (burgers, chops, steaks, fish etc) and serve lunch and dinner every day beginning at 11 a.m. Probably the main reason we like to stop there is to talk to Brad and visit with the other local Door County residents like us who tend to stop in whenever they are in the area. Birmingham’s is Door County’s version of Cheers! Across the street, Brad is building a new bait shop which will be a nice addition since the quarry (a beautiful boat launch and park) is just up the road.

It wasn’t open yet last week but it very well may be open for business this week. On our way home we spotted this little deer in Little Harbor…


We were in the convertible, so I got up close and personal…

The weather has been warm but it’s summer people… it is supposed to be warm! I love it although it has been hard on the housekeepers. The heat wave (I think 90 degrees was tops) will break on Sunday and the temps will drop down into the 70′s again.

We have been swamped lately but next week we have openings, so if it is too hot where you are, escape the heat and come hang out with us in Door County!

reading my new favorite mag...

I just picked up the autumn edition of Door County Living… it is now my new favorite magazine. Door County Living is the sister publication of the Peninsula Pulse a free weekly publication and resource of Door County arts, news and entertainment. Both publications have tons of interesting articles with info about Door County residents, businesses, characters, restaurants, nature and of course art. The Pulse is the go-to guide for entertainment in DC. Coincidentally, both are free… yes, free. I love free stuff.

Anyway, while I was reading the latest edition of Door County Living I stumbled across an article (The Small School Experience by Gary Jones a Gibraltar teacher) about the three Northern Door Schools… Sevastopol (where our kids attended), Gibraltar (where Mark and I graduated) and Washington Island (there were 6 graduates this year) and low and behold there was a quote from our son Joe who just graduated from Sevastopol. Upon further reading, our older son Josh’s in-laws were mentioned (A Sea of Orchards) as owners of Schartner’s Farm Market along with our grandson Jaden.

In the article about Door County golf, there were three photos of our God son, Ed Strege. I guess it is just really special to have a nice, glossy magazine that can really get to the heart and soul of Door County. Like George Bailey said, it is the citizens that “do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community” … it is nice to read about them as well.

There are probably 6 Door County radio stations but of course I have two favorites. WDOR owned and operated by Eddie Allen and his son Danny. We have known Eddie for well over 30 years. I met him when I worked at the Savings and Loan in Sturgeon Bay and he did the play by play for the Door County League Baseball which he still does to this day. The radio station is still listened to by many for its local sports, news and interviews with people regarding current events. Deloris Allen, Eddie’s mom used to read a new recipe everyday… many which I still have. At Christmas time, The Cinnamon Bear story was told bit by bit each day for the children after school.

While WDOR will always be a favorite, as far as music goes, I would have to go with 106.9 The Lodge. I love it. Good music, local artists on Wednesday nights at nine and best of all… no “opinions” from the owners or anyone else for that matter. They also don’t read the police report… another bonus. They play tons of Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffet. It is not a “classic” station or a pop station but a combination of really great music, some old some new. Our daughter Emilie‘s friend Chrystal Kugle is a DJ on the weekends. She is a communications major at UW-Milwaukee. One of The Lodge slogans goes something like no sports, no shopping shows or court reports. Now that is music to my ears.

In my honorable mention catagory I would have to mention WSRG 97.7 The Big Dawg… my kids are all a huge fan of this station and its music. While I am not a big country fan I am probably in the minority in Door County.

At any rate publications or music… Door County rocks!

Highway to Door County… quicker and safer

It took 8 years but it was finally finished last fall… Highway 42/57 from Green Bay to Door County, that is. What was once a two lane road is now a four lane highway which makes the drive from Green Bay to Sturgeon Bay quicker and much more safe. Although the highway bypasses Dykesville, a quaint little village, it gets travelers to Door County a lot quicker and… did I say safer? From this sign just crossing into Door County from Kewaunee County it takes maybe 30 minutes to Egg Harbor… keep in mind I am a slow driver.

Before the new road, the Friday night drive into Door County was practically bumper to bumper with crazed drivers weaving in and out of traffic to pass. Not so anymore, guests can enjoy a much easier, but still beautiful drive to their favorite vacation destination.

Mani/Pedi

In preparation for my TV gig I decided to get a manicure and a pedicure on Saturday. I called Touch of Class Salon in Egg Harbor earlier in the week. The salon is located south of Egg Harbor but north of Carlsville. Debbie Ripp moved her salon to this location recently from Carlsville and joined Lori and David’s Creative Touch Salon. Neither salon has a website… not sure why. From the outside the building doesn’t really look like a salon and on the inside it’s not trendy or pretentious in any way. The stylists are friendly and they make you feel right at home. While I don’t have my hair done at this salon, my parents did for years. Debbie Ripp and her husband also own the Nightingale Supper Club in Sturgeon Bay long known for their excellent Prime Rib and steaks. Debbie is also my daughter-in-law’s aunt. EVERYBODY is related in Door County! Anyway, back to the mani/pedi. The back room where Sandy also does facials is nicely decorated and overlooks the back yard which is quite nice. If it were later in the day, Sandy would have offered me a glass of wine. For $55 dollars plus tip and two hours worth of pampering I received a great pedicure and a manicure complete with a paraffin wax on my hands. Pretty excellent deal if you ask me. I know I will suggest the salon to our guests who are looking for a little pampering but don’t want to hand over fists full of cash… works for me. I know I’ll be back.
