There are GO BO! hats, wrist bands and Gibraltar is even having a GO BO! dance tonight in honor of their classmate.
Our “little boy” Josh had Leukemia when he was just 2 1/2 so this cause if very close to our hearts. Our son is now 29 and expecting his third child next month. We all continue to keep Bo and his mom Annika in our prayers.
They call it the Grandaddy of all festivals Sister Bay’s Fall Fest. It is one of the oldest festivals in Door County. They have a great parade, food, drinks and lots of music, including everyone’s favorite The Happy Schnapps Combo. It’s a blast but you better love a crowd… in my mind that’s what makes it fun… people! New this year will be the Sister Bay themed hat contest… one can only imagine. Can you say goats on the roof?

On a side note, life long Sister Bay resident Annika Johnson’s 12 year old son Bo was just diagnosed recently with very serious form of Leukemia. Next weekend July 30, Carlsville will host a double festival which looks to be tons of fun. The 10th annual Carlsville Day has joined forces with the Town of Egg Harbor in celebrating their Sesquicentennial. The Town of Egg Harbor, which includes Carlsville, kind of runs around the outside the Village of Egg Harbor but mostly to the south. Mark and I live in the town of Egg Harbor but our business Egg Harbor Lodge is in the village… get it? Trust me, I am still confused. Anyway, it looks to be a pretty darn big affair complete with a parade, pony and tractor rides and performances by the UW-Madison Marching Band. Our neighbors, Bob and Dolores Spittlemeister are the Parade Marshalls… nice choice by the way. Not only that, there will be inflatables, craft fairs, free water slides and bands playing from 3-8pm (The Bittorf Bros., Modern Day Drifters and a Polka band… Can’t get better than that). Not enough? How about a cherry pit spit competition (I am good at that) a Wild West reenactment and free Door County Trolley rides to Carlsville businesses and the Egg Harbor Town hall. There will also be a pet psychic… I might have to take our dog Bailey to that. Nah.

It was lucky duck night and I didn’t want to miss it. What’s Lucky Duck you ask? Well, the Pub issues a certain amount of numbers (you can only get in if there are numbers available). Emilie and I were able to secure numbers a few months ago. Then you put twenty bucks in before the drawing but you must be present to win. The winnings depend on how many people show up. If the person isn’t there half goes back in the pot and they draw another winner. The winner this week? None other than our gardener/landscape lady, Jerry! YAY Jerry. PS… Thanks Kyle and Faye, the food was great.
Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls played in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. There were a lot of locals there which was nice to see. Why I only recognized about three songs, but the ladies were hugely entertaining. Their song “Closer to Fine” nearly brought down the house as did their very last song “Galileo”. It was a really nice night.
Door County Triathlon
The Door County Triathlon is this weekend. Unfortunately, after tearing a tendon in my ankle and needing surgery, I am out this year. I transferred my spot to Emilie’s friend Chrystal and I will volunteer instead. Not quite as fun, but I can cheer all my girls on as they pass me on the way to the finish line. The Y’s Blossom Run was held on Saturday at the Egg Harbor Marina. Runners ran either a 5 mile, 2 mile or 1 mile youth fun run. There was a decent turnout and even though it was a bit windy, the sun broke out of the clouds from time to time. Nellie and her friend Eric placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in their age group. Nellie’s only goal was to beat Eric… I didn’t realize she had such a competitive edge. Congrats to both! No running for me, after surgery to repair a torn tendon I am out of commission for awhile. The Door County Triathlon is out for me too… damn.
We ran into JR and Nell Jarosh of Edgewood Orchard Gallery. Like Egg Harbor Lodge, the gallery will open for the season next weekend. JR ran the 5k with his 4 1/2 year old twins in tow…

Afterward, we headed up to Ephraim to eat a breakfast burrito at Good Eggs. Saturday was their first day open for the season and the place was filled with locals. The breakfast burritos (or omelet wrap if you prefer… same thing) are made to order and are to die for. They also have some bakery items, and smoothies, coffee, OJ, milk etc. Normally, I would split a burrito because they are so large but all of us were starving so we each ordered our own. Located in a cottage near the corner of Brookside Lane and Hwy. 42 (next to the Confectionery) on the south end of Ephraim, Good Eggs is a not to miss breakfast spot. The owners are nice, food delish and in the summer they are also open for lunch and offer their “Grilled Cheese Project” Pick your bread, cheese etc. YUM… This cabana is not fancy, it isn’t especially speedy and their isn’t a lot of room to sit down. This is a breakfast wrap at it’s best… period. Get it to go and head to the park, the beach or your balcony at Egg Harbor Lodge, it’s that good.

This is Kim’s mom Jackie and her sister Katie. If Kimberly becomes Miss America, Katie will take the reigns as Miss Wisconsin since she was first runner up at the Miss Wisconsin pageant.
We celebrated New Year’s Eve with live Maine lobster… at home. Going out on New Year’s Eve is for amateurs.
Last night we worked/attended a benefit for our good friend Mike Kaye who is in need of a heart transplant. We have been friends with the Kayes for over twenty years. The benefit was held at Mr. G’s restaurant in their huge ballroom. There had to be over 500 people there. Even in a bum economy, the force of Door Countyites is not to be reckoned with. Businesses donated goods, people donated time and money… it was truly amazing. Lucky for us, Mike and Mary (and their family) were able to be there… for a while at least. Mike is doing so much better than when we saw him in October when he was still in a Milwaukee hospital. It was really heart warming to see all the love and generosity… after all, Mark and I were at the receiving end of the same, not once but twice. When Josh was 2 1/2 way back in 1985, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Mark and I were young and scared, not to mention broke. The community came out full force with a benefit at Casey’s for Josh. At first we were embarrassed but as the people arrived, they were so full of love and good wishes for us… it was truly amazing. Then again in 1998, as luck would have it, a tornado ripped through Door County and our house was demolished. Again Door County decided to help those of us whose homes and/or businesses were destroyed. It was held at the baseball field behind Bley’s bar in West Jacksonport. Tons of people came, danced, partied and contributed to the cause.
In 1976 my parents bought a motel in Door County, Wisconsin. As a teenager, I was like (insert swear word here)! I cried, many years later I learned my mom cried too. Little did I know it would become the best thing that ever happened to me. In Door County, there are no boundaries. Neither age, background or finances interfere with friendship. The people of this community just amaze me. Everyone is here for each other in good times and bad.

I realize Christmas isn’t here yet, but now is the time to plan for a New Year’s weekend getaway in Door County. Mike’s Port Pub and Innlet Motelin Jacksonport has an awesome New Year’s eve package that includes a room, two Prime Rib dinners, drinks and party favors for $175 per couple. Nice. Then catch the Annual Polar Bear Plungeat the Jacksonport beach at noon. After that, skip back over to watch the Egg Harbor New Years Day Parade at 1:00. This year Egg Harborhas dubbed the weekend Frosty Fest which includes an Icy Fun Run to benefit the Y. I won’t be able to participate in the run, but watch for us in the parade. The girls and I will ride in the hot tub with a surprise guest (hopefully). We have a great theme this year, but it remains a secret until we put the float together in the morning at the church. Our parade wouldn’t be complete without our baton twirling Santa… Christine Tierney from Christine’s Casuals and Classics.

The Egg Harbor Lion’s Club sells brats downtown and most of the boutiques, restaurants and wineries will be open. The Wisconsin Badgersplay in the Rose Bowl at 3:30 and all the bars will have the game on… WOW… what a great day! Coincidentally, Joe’s friend Betsy Byrne’s brother, Jake Byrne is a Badger… watch for number 82 who plays tight end. January 1st is also my niece Jen’s, 22nd birthday, so all of my family will be out in full force celebrating the occasion.
So, if you are sick of staying home or going to your boring neighbor’s for dinner on New Years Eve, come hang out with us in Door County. Trust me, it’s a blast.
