Celebrating Carlsville and Egg Harbor…

Next weekend July 30, Carlsville will host a double festival which looks to be tons of fun. The 10th annual Carlsville Day has joined forces with the Town of Egg Harbor in celebrating their Sesquicentennial. The Town of Egg Harbor, which includes Carlsville, kind of runs around the outside the Village of Egg Harbor but mostly to the south. Mark and I live in the town of Egg Harbor but our business Egg Harbor Lodge is in the village… get it? Trust me, I am still confused. Anyway, it looks to be a pretty darn big affair complete with a parade, pony and tractor rides and performances by the UW-Madison Marching Band. Our neighbors, Bob and Dolores Spittlemeister are the Parade Marshalls… nice choice by the way. Not only that, there will be inflatables, craft fairs, free water slides and bands playing from 3-8pm (The Bittorf Bros., Modern Day Drifters and a Polka band… Can’t get better than that). Not enough? How about a cherry pit spit competition (I am good at that) a Wild West reenactment and free Door County Trolley rides to Carlsville businesses and the Egg Harbor Town hall. There will also be a pet psychic… I might have to take our dog Bailey to that. Nah.

I am glad the festival isn’t two days long or they may have named it Carlsville Daze. That would have just been wrong…

American Folklore Theatre

Last night we had the opportunity to check out the world premier of Bing! The Cherry Musical but not before we headed to Bayside to grab something to eat. I love going to Bayside there is always someone we know in there. I had the jambalaya and the girls had a salad and the guys all had sandwiches. All good… as always.

 

It was slightly drizzly and the rain policy at AFT is pretty much unless it is raining pretty heavily the show must go on. If it rains during the show they may take a break and resume when it lets up. Most people just put up their hoods… umbrellas not allowed. Anyway, we loved the show and the story behind it. Mark’s dad was a cherry grower and the musical portrayed the plight of cherry growers really well. There were a lot of funny lines and some really great songs. We didn’t encounter any bugs either which was a bonus.

The musical really showed how most people feel about living in Door County… it is the greatest place on earth.

Memorial Weekend…

The weather is looking good for Memorial Day weekend here in Door County. Everything is green and growing and all the restaurants and boutiques are open for business . Jacksonport is hosting their annual Maifest Parade and art fair over the weekend. The American Legion Baseball team that Mark coaches is having a brat fry on Saturday at noon in Harbor View Park in downtown Egg Harbor. Brats, yum.

American Folklore Theatre and Peninsula Players have announced their playbill for the 2011 season. The American Folklore Theatre has a new show this summer… Bing! The Cherry Musical makes it’s debut June 15.

Mid Winter in Door County… FUN!

What do we do in the winter you ask? Well… last weekend we checked out Birmingham’s Cherry Bounce-off. Anybody can bring in cherry bounce or any variation there of. Cherry Bounce? Well, in July, picked, ripe cherries are added to a jar. Most people use quart or even gallon glass jars. Sugar and booze are added… a lot of booze. The favorite around here would be whisky, but brandy, vodka or any kind of liquor can be used. My favorite is the vodka but they all taste good, IMHO. Watch yourself, the cherries themselves are delicious… but deadly. Somebody once said, “you are to sample it… not bathe in it”. Well said.

The bounce isn’t ready until at least Thanksgiving… Christmas is more like it. There were around 20 entries this year down from about 27 last year. Not all the entries had cherries or were even made with cherries. One variation was made with pineapple… not a winner however. My entry… well, actually Matthew Peterson’s (Casey’s) entry wasn’t a winner either although I loved it. He said it was “whiskey moonshine” . Come to think of it, all the entries were moonshine. Anyone can bring samples and the bounce was flowing freely all night. The contest brings out a big crowd so it made for a fun night. The winner takes home the “trophy”, a wooden toilet seat and is expected to engrave carve their own name before it is brought back to be proudly displayed at Birmingham’s bar/restaurant. We cheeseheads are a classy bunch. The best thing I tried all night were chocolate-dipped, bounce cherries… yum.

We Door Countyites are very cleaver at thinking of wild and crazy stuff to do. This weekend, cherry pit spitting at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country! This is part of their Winter Wine and Cherry Fest. This is in addition to Fish Creek’s Winter Festival which is also this weekend. So much to do… so little time.

Gov bets Door County pies…

Wisconsin Governor Bets Door County Cherry Pie and Other Delights on Packers vs Bears Game!

Who would have ever thought cherry pies from Door County would have anything to do with the Packer vs Bear NFC Championship game this weekend?

When Jon Jarosh, the Communications & PR Director from the Door County Visitor Bureau noticed that Governor Scott Walker was Tweeting @GovWalker for possible ideas on a wager he might use to challenge the Governor of Illinois over this weekend’s Packer vs Bear game, Jon immediately thought of Door County cherries!

“I thought it would be a great opportunity for us to offer up some of our delicious Door County cherry pies as part of the Wisconsin side of the wager,” Jarosh said Wednesday. “So I tweeted back and said we’d be happy to put up some Door County cherry pies. The next day we got a call from the Governor’s office asking to take us up on our offer.”

Delicious cherry pies from Door County are only a part of the bet between Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. Wisconsin cranberry products, bratwurst, custard and honey will join Door County cherry pies in the friendly wager by Governor Walker.

According to a press release issued by the governor’s office, the loser of the bet will volunteer in a food pantry in the winner’s state wearing a t-shirt of the opposing team while distributing the food from the wager. In addition, the loser must also fly the opposing team’s flag in his governor’s office for a day before the Super Bowl.

“I received many tweets offering some of Wisconsin’s most famous foods as a wager,” Governor Walker said in a statement released Wednesday. “I’m grateful that win or lose, those food producers have committed to donating food to the pantry at which the losing Governor volunteers. I look forward to hosting Governor Quinn in Wisconsin after a 28-24 Packer victory,” he said.

Jarosh said ten Door County cherry pies from Sweetie Pies in Fish Creek will be sent to a yet-to-be-determined location selected by the governor’s office following the game, and that hopefully it will be in Wisconsin. He was excited for Door County and the Visitor Bureau to be a part of the wager between Governors, and looked forward to the county’s popular red fruit helping carry the green and gold to victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
