What I did on my summer “vacation”…

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Where did it go? Summer I mean. We had a great summer… the weather was phenomenal, the guests were happy and we were able to get out and about in Door County.

With a colder and rainier than usual Spring we were happy to get the warm weather in July and August. We didn’t have a lot of the extremely hot weather which was nice. Weather, blah, blah, blah. Let’s get to the good stuff.

Well… it didn’t start out great. I tore a tendon and after surgery and a cast for two months etc., I am back walking 5 miles… thanks Dr. Hecker and Ministry Door County Medical Center!

We visited some hangouts including John Henry’s…

Memorial Weekend…

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Door County Cherry Blossoms

The weather is looking good for Memorial Day weekend here in Door County. Everything is green and growing and all the restaurants and boutiques are open for business . Jacksonport is hosting their annual Maifest Parade and art fair over the weekend. The American Legion Baseball team that Mark coaches is having a brat fry on Saturday at noon in Harbor View Park in downtown Egg Harbor. Brats, yum.

Looking for last minute plans for the weekend? Look no further as we have a couple of cancellations at Egg Harbor Lodge complete with the “Best Water View in Door County!”

Door County Tidbits…

Friday, July 30th, 2010

It has been pretty busy in Door County the last few weeks. We did have time to check out a play at Peninsula Players last week. Isaiah Spetz who will be a sixth grader at Sevastopol School in Door County acted in the production of Over the Tavern. He did an amazing job and the play was hilarious. We saw Isaiah’s mom before the play and asked if we would be able to see Isaiah afterward… we did and took this pic… I had my camera on the wrong setting…

with Isaiah at Peninsula Players

Isaiah’s mom Heather, is a Sevastopol High School English teacher (all our kids had her). Nellie and Emilie’s also had Heather as their softball coach and her son Riley plays on Mark’s Nor-Door Legion Baseball team. Speaking of which, they are at the state tournament this weekend. They lost last night but will play again today. If they win, they go on, if they lose, they go home. Good luck Chiefs.. we will be listening.

I saw Kimberly Sawyer, Miss Wisconsin at the Northern Door Chiefs Regional Baseball game and took a photo of her next to her Miss Wis mobile…

I took a few photos around Egg Harbor Lodge lately, and thought I would share them…

This is one of our guests, Ben at the Egg Harbor Lodge car wash washing his prized possession…

The Krafts and the Frankels going out for a joy ride…

And I can’t help but throw this one in, Baby Adi with her BFF, our dog Bailey… when they think I am not watching…

Giddyup!

The next few weeks are really busy but the last half of August it slows down so it is a great time to escape the humidity and head to Door County. The weather is usually perfect and the crowds dwindle… oh yeah, and baseball will finally be over and we can kayak again!

Mike’s Port Pub in Door County

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Mark had a game last night, so Joe, his friend Betsy and I headed over to Mike’s Port Pub in Jacksonport to grab something to eat. Mark’s sister Barbie and her husband Mike Lautenbach own and operate the pub. All four of their kids have worked at the restaurant over the years so like Egg Harbor Lodge it is truly a family operation. For a smaller restaurant, they have a relatively large menu with everything from chicken tenders to steak. I had the small sirloin steak with broasted potatoes and it rivaled any steak I have eaten at a steak house. Joe of course favors the burgers, and we all had the chicken dumpling soup. My entree was a special and the soup was included. Barbie’s chicken dumpling soup is the best I have ever eaten… including my own which is really good. Mike’s has a huge local following so it is a pretty bustling place on Friday nights. Had Mark been with us he would have certainly had the perch which is always good. Barbie and Mike have recently added outdoor seating with picnic tables and a covered area.

Here we are after our dinner… I always have my camera!

Mike’s dad and uncle owned Casey’s Inn in Egg Harbor for years… Mike’s grandfather was Casey and Barbie and Mike named their eldest Casey as well. Mark and Barbie’s parents owned what is now Mojo Rosa’s in Egg Harbor which was called Jean and Bob’s Midtown Tap and they lived above the tavern. So both Barbie and Mike come from families “in the business”. When I started dating Mark, his parents had the bar and on Sundays in the summer after the Egg Harbor baseball games (which Mark played and coached) EVERYONE went to the Midtown Tap. Now those were the days… we just had a blast. After the Egg Harbor New Year’s Day Parade, Mark’s mom would make a venison stew and homemade bread for the crowd… no charge of course.

Mark’s Legion Baseball team won one game and lost the other. Joe is too old to play this year but Mark has a great group of guys playing. They boys are between the ages of 16-19. Best of luck Northern Door Chiefs!

Door County weather for Saturday, June 19… Sunny and 75 degrees! I am heading up to Ellison Bay to spend the night with my BFF Nancy at her cabin. We are going to one of my favorite restaurants tonight to eat too… JJ’s! What a perfect way to spend a weekend. Lucky me!

Egg Harbor Baseball… Champions!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Our beloved Egg Harbor Indians have clinched the title for the first time in 22 years this past Sunday. Mark coached the 1987 team to victory while Mark Stoeger who has been coaching the Egg Harbor team the last few years was the bat boy that year. Mark’s Dad coached and played, Mark coached and played for Egg Harbor as did his brother Bert, our oldest Josh and our youngest Joe who still plays. Mark’s dad Bob Sawyer was inducted into the Door County League Baseball Hall of Fame ( yes, there is even a Hall of Fame!) last year. For years, Door County baseball was the activity of choice each Sunday afternoon for many locals and we still try to get to games as often as possible. We were there Sunday for the celebration which coincided with “Fan Appreciation Day”. Mark roasted a pig and there was a potluck for all the players and fans afterward. I snapped this photo of the team after the game…

Egg Harbor Indians...2009 Champs!

Joe’s Nor-Door American- Legion Baseball team (Mark coaches the team) also went to the State tournament last weekend… sadly they lost one game before the championship game. Here is our family after the Regional game which was held at our home field in Institute.

Josh, Carissa, Adison, Nellie, Jaden with me, Joe, Em and Mark

Summertime not only means keeping Egg Harbor Lodge running smoothly, it also means tons of baseball.
